About

I ❤️ Goatsuckers.

I’m a bird-watcher who’s just a bit obsessed with Nightjars (aka Goatsuckers). So much so that I’m writing. a book about a single species – the Eastern Whip-poor-will. Tentatively titled The Lonesome Whip-poor-will: The Cultural History of America’s Most Meaningful Bird, the book will be published sometime in 2025-2026 by NYU Press.

You can also find my writing on birds, birding, and our practices of observing on the Center for Humans and Nature’s blog and Denver Field Ornithologist’s newsletter, The Lark Bunting. Read more here.

When I’m not watching, observing, and reading about birds, I’m a sociologist and educator at the University of Denver. I’ve written two books, the most recent of which is Denial: How We Hide, Ignore, and Explain Away Problems.
